Please also note that we will not be passing out printed copies of all of the talks during the workshop this year, but will be providing them online in PDF form during the talks. We will provide printouts of the tutorials, since you will be using your laptops for the tutorials themselves, and it would be inconvenient to have to keep switching back and forth.


Welcome to the NCMI's biennial Workshop on Single Particle Reconstruction, Validation and Analysis. This workshop focuses on single particle reconstruction and related techniques, including tutorials for a variety of different computational methods. A full EMAN2 tutorial will remain one central focus of the workshop, however we are expanding the content this year to cover a broader range of current topics, including :

  • Single particle analysis
  • Dynamics & Flexibility
  • Single particle tomography
  • Iterative helical real space reconstruction (IHRSR)
  • Map validation
  • Modeling and structure interpretation
  • Visualization

The workshop will consist of theory talks each morning followed by a 1/2 day of tutorials, with a research talk to finish up before dinner each day. Tutorials will cover EMAN2, SPARX, Gorgon, Chimera, Rosetta and other tools. Note that many of these software packages are extremely flexible/complicated, so in many cases the tutorials will simply be initial introductions to the software in question. While the workshop will be suitable for beginners, some advanced topics will also be covered.

The workshop is free of charge, including a number of provided meals, but participants are responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses. Unfortunately we do not have funds available to assist with these other expenses. This is historically a very popular event, and space is limited, so please register early.

For the tutorial sessions, participants may use either their own laptop computers or one of the on-site PCs. Slots on the PC's are limited, so if you have an adequate laptop we would urge you to consider this option. A suitable laptop will have : accelerated 3-D graphics (Nvidia or ATI/AMD), at least 2 gigs of ram, at least 20 gigs of free disk space, and preferably a large/high resolution display. You will also need to be comfortable with installing open-source software (a complete list will be available before the workshop). If you have a suitable laptop please select this option when registering.

On the first night of the workshop there will be an opportunity for participants to give short (~10 min) talks about their own research. If you are interested in doing this, please select this option when registering.

NOTE After registering, you should receive an immediate email confirming your registration request. If you do not receive this message within an hour or so, please contact sludtke@bcm.edu, as it means there was some problem with your registration information. Actual acceptance to the workshop may take up to 1-2 days after submission.
