NCMI Workshop on Single Particle Reconstruction, Structural Variability and Modeling

DATE

Friday 30, October 2015

EVENT TIME

All Day

LOCATION

Auditorium R2-306. The Methodist Research Institute

Houston, TX

The Workshop is Over

The workshops are typically held biennially, so the next will likely be in 2017. We typically hold smaller local workshops for people in the off-years. If this is something you are interested in for your site, contact sludtke@bcm.edu

Welcome to the NCMI's biennial Workshop on Single Particle Reconstruction, Structural Variability and Modeling. The workshop will begin on day 1 with introductory talks and a tutorial on EMAN2.1. Days 2 and 3 will be devoted to the issue of both compositional and conformational heterogeneity, from multiple perspectives studying the approaches used in 3 different software packages: Steve Ludtke (EMAN2.1), Sjors Scheres (Relion) and Pawel Penczek (Sparx). While variability is often one of the greatest barriers to high resolution structure determination, it also represents a great opportunity to learn more about how complex macromolecular machines function in solution. On the final day of the workshop we will discuss modeling across all resolution ranges, from low resolution docking to de-novo model building at high resolution.

After day 4 of the workshop we are hosting a one day symposium celebrating the 30th year of the National Center for Macromolecular Imaging. The symposium is hosted at the same site, and is free, but you will need to register for it separately at: ncmi.bcm.edu/ncmi/events/workshops/workshops_146. Follow the link for details.

The workshop is completely free to attend, including a number of meals, thanks to generous contributions from our sponsors, though participants will need to cover their own travel and lodging expenses. We have arranged for discounted group booking at a hotel near the workshop site. Unlike previous workshops, we will be hosting the event at the Methodist Research Institute in the heart of the Houston Medical Center.

The workshop will include a mix of theory talks and tutorial sessions. Participants will need to bring their own laptops to take part in the tutorials. We will provide detailed information on software to download and install in advance of the workshop. While a few of the software packages used at the workshop, including EMAN2.1, Chimera and SPARX are available for machines running Windows, this may be a challenging platform to use for much the workshop. Please see details under "computing facilities" on the left.

On the first night of the workshop there will be an opportunity for participants to give short (~10 min) talks about their own research. If you are interested in doing this, please select this option when registering.

This is historically a very popular event, and space is limited, so please register early.

NOTE: After registering, you should receive an immediate email confirming your registration request. If you do not receive this message within an hour or so, please contact sludtke@bcm.edu, as it means there was some problem with your registration information. Actual acceptance to the workshop may take up to 1-2 days after submission.

IMPORTANT: The reserved block of rooms at the conference hotel is only available through the end of August, so please reserve your room as soon as possible after you have received confirmation of registration.
